GORINO

The town is situated near the mouth of the Po of Goro, in the easternmost part of the province of Ferrara. The advancement of the Po's mouth permitted this area to emerge from the sea at the beginning of the 19th century, and it is in fact at this time that the first group of inhabitants settled on the banks of this stretch of the Po, where they built fishers' huts and a port.
The building of a lantern that in 1870 substituted the Old Lantern (still visible along the Po of Goro's embankment) also dates back to the beginning of the 19th century. Due to the quick advancement of the coastline, the Old Lantern soon became unserviceable; thus, another lantern was built further along but this one was blown up by the Germans in 1945 before the retreat. Today's Lighthouse of Goro was built in 1950 on the easternmost part of the Scannone sandbank.

In 1953, the Vallazza and Vallesina valleys were reclaimed, thus diminishing the area occupied by marshes behind the town. The marshy area that used to lie in front of the church was reclaimed in 1964, thus allowing for the building of a town square.
In 1870, the Institute of the Holy Spirit had a chapel built. Since the chapel was falling to pieces by 1953, the Body for the Po Valley Delta decided to build the current church, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of Mercy. Inside, there are a 18th century statue of the Madonna and a votive dedicated to Mary dating to the 19th century.

Gorino's economy, like Goro's, is based on fishing. However, Gorino has made efforts to develop nature tourism, which is becoming an important source of revenue.
